Bonefish
Flyfishing and light tackle sight fishing for Bonefish on the pristine backcountry
and ocean flats surrounding Key West.
|
Known to many anglers as the
"ghost of the flats" or the "gray ghost", the Bonefish is respected by
many as the worthiest of opponents on the Florida flats. They are known for their
wariness, neurotic personalities, lightening speed and natural camouflage that makes them
nearly impossible to see. It's common for a just hooked Bonefish to spool off 125 yards of
line, leaving you in awe of its intense speed. Before you have a chance to regroup, it's
off again on its second run. |
|
Bonefish scour the flats
bottoms in search of their favorite meal of crustaceans. They roam the shallowest of
flats, generally 6 inches to a couple of feet deep, making wading for them an exciting
challenge and an excellent chance to cool off on a warm day. In the Lower Keys, their
weight ranges anywhere from 4 to 12 pounds; a perfect size to challenge an 8 or 9 weight
fly outfit or 6 to 10 pound spinning setup.
