Permit
Flyfishing and light tackle sight fishing for Permit on the pristine backcountry
and ocean flats surrounding Key West.
|
One of the most highly prized fish of the
flats, the Permit is a crafty, elusive, witty character. They are much like the Bonefish,
in that they exhibit explosive speed and long runs, but they have more pack behind the
punch! They are bigger and stronger and even more wary than the Bonefish.
Most anglers are fortunate to spot a Permit, making it even more difficult to catch one.
This makes the Permit the ultimate flats challenge! Especially on fly. |
|
Permit are found in waters
similar to Bonefish, but because of their craftiness and size, they prefer to hang closer
to channels and deeper water, where they feel more at ease. They range in size from 20 to
50 pounds, and put up a demanding fight. A typical angler uses 9 to 10 weight fly outfits
or an 8 to 12 pound spinning setup.
